Schools Serving the Argyle Icelandic Community


  The website “Historic Sites of Manitoba”, created by Gordon Goldsboro for the Manitoba Historical Society, is the source of many photos and some of the information used here.

Many of the photos were part of a collection of School Inspector Photos held at the Archives of Manitoba.

Antonius School No. 2127  -  22-5-14  -  (1926 – 1959)

The Antonius School District was established in May 1925 and a one-room schoolhouse operated at NW22-5-14W. The district was dissolved in 1960 and its area was added to the Baldur Consolidated School District.

Bru School No. 368  (ca. 1885 – 1959)
First building SE 16-6-13
Moved 1897 SW 11-6-13
Replaced 1921





Bru School was formally established in June 1885, with a building erected in the southeast quarter of 16-6-13. It operated at this location until 1897 when it moved to SW11-6-13W, staying there until 1921 when it relocated to NW11-6-13W. The school closed in 1959 and its students went to Cypress River Consolidated School No. 2357 or St. Alphonse Consolidated School No. 2371. A cairn was dedicated at the former site of the school on 6 July 1985.

Cypress Valley School No. 394 (1885 – 1958)

Moved to NE 24-6-13 about 1890

Burned 1909 and rebuilt 1910.

Cypress Valley School was formally established in April 1885, with a building erected in the northeast quarter of 24-6-13. In 1910, the original building was replaced by a wood frame structure. The school closed in January 1958 and its students went to Cypress River Consolidated School No. 2357. As of 1986, the building was still standing on its original site and being used as a granary. It was demolished in July 2002.

Frey School No. 890 24-6-14  (1897 – 1946)

The Frey School District was established in June 1896 and a one-room schoolhouse operated at NW24-6-14. The district was dissolved in 1959 and its area became part of the Glenboro Consolidated School District.

      




Hecla School No. 355 (1884 1959)

The Hecla School District was established formally in November 1884 and a one-room school building was later erected on 16-6-14. Until 1889, classes were held only during the summer because poor roads in the vicinity rendered winter transportation difficult. At the time, there were 120 students enrolled at the school. In 1897, a second school was built at this site, NE20-6-14W, and the original school building was sold for use as a Methodist church.
The school closed in January 1959 and its remaining students went to Glenboro Consolidated School No. 2367. The building was sold and dismantled. A commemorative monument was unveiled on 19 July 1992.

    




     
Hola School No. 889 (1897 1960)

The Hola School District was established formally in June 1896, named for the Icelandic word for hills and, in the spring of 1897, a one-room school building and barn were erected on the southwest corner of 1-6-14. Classes began in June 1897, with 53 students enrolled. The school closed in June 1953 when enrollment dropped below 8 students and its remaining ones went to Baldur Consolidated School No. 889. The district was dissolved in January 1960. The building sits behind a commemorative cairn erected on 28 June 1987.

 

  The school had a four-team stable.




Mimir School No. 891 (1896 – 1960)
NE32-5-14W



The Mimir School District was established in June 1896 and a one-room schoolhouse operated at NE32-5-14W. The district was dissolved in 1960 and its area was divided between the Belmont Consolidated School District, Antonius School District, and Glenboro Consolidated School District.

Oliver School No. 1766 (1915 – 1949)
21-6-13



Oliver School was formally established in November 1914, with a building erected in the northeast quarter of 21-6-13 It closed in 1949 and its students went to Cypress River Consolidated School No. 2357. A plaque at the former site of the school lists the teachers who taught there through the years.

Thor School No. 1430 (1908 – 1959)
28-5-13



The Thor School District was established formally in July 1907 and a school building was erected the next year on the northeast corner of 28-5-13. The school closed in 1959 and its remaining students went to St. Alphonse Consolidated School No. 2371. The building no longer sits on the site but a cairn erected on 9 July 1995 commemorates it.
