Beginning in 1893, the region  near the forks of the Souris and Assinboine became the focus of fur trade activity in southwestern Manitoba.

The first post in the region was the HBC's Brandon House - in the clearing right of centre.



Brandon House was in the clearing, while competing posts were across the river,

Soon after the the HBC established Brandon House, the North West Co, establlshed Ash House and other posts, expanding westward.



To the south at Turtle Mountain, two competing posts existd for a short time.



Although Ash House was not open very long - other posts followed in the Hartney - Lauder region.



Fort Desjarlais was the largest operation in the Hartney- Lauder area.
