Historic figures are grouped by basic occupations or avocations. Some people who had a few occupations (like merchant, mayor, postal official) will appear in a few places. Individuals are then presented alphabetically in each grouping.

Aranson, Skafti
Biography: Born Iceland 1850
Claims: Arrived in Winnipeg on July 16, 1875. First Icelander to set foot in Manitoba.
Shipped the first cream from the district by rail from Glenboro.

Mr. Skafti Arason a farmer, and Christian Johnson, originally settled in Kinmount Ontario, and were part of the expedition that settled upon the location of the New Iceland colony at present day Gimli. They later moved to Argyle.


Asmundson, Asmunder
Biography: Born Iceland 1845: Died 1924
Claims: Asmunder lost both feet and a hand to frostbite after barely surviving a winter journey in his native Iceland in the early 1870’s. In the summer of 1883, he moved with his wife to Canada and settled in the Baldur district in Manitoba.
His courage and toughness were an example to his neighbours.

Christopherson, Sigurder
Biography:  Born 1848, Iceland. Died 1921 Grund
Claims: The first Icelandic settler to file a claim. In 1880 he came from the “New Iceland” colony at Gimli, visited the district south of Glenboro and influenced several others from New Iceland to come south.

Acted as Immigration Agent – traveled to Iceland several times.
Real Estate and Insurance Business

In 1880 Kristoferson from the “New Iceland” colony at Gimli, visited the district south of Glenboro.  He was impressed with the agricultural potential of the region and influenced several others from New Iceland to come south. He homesteaded SE 10-6-14, the first Icelandic settler to file a claim.

Earlier, in 1875, Mr. Kristoferson, then living in an Icelandic settlement in Wisconsin, served as a delegate for that community, along with Mr. Skafti Arason and Christian Johnson then residing in Kinmount Ontario, in an expedition that settled upon the location of the New Iceland colony.
Sigurdser’s homestead in New Iceland was named Husavik, a name that lives on today. He was there for four years.

Cornock, William
Biography:   1846, England
Claims: Mr. Cornock tradeed a farm in Glen Valley BC for a farm which became the site of Greenway. Served in Riel Rebellion (Batoche) as a member of the Scout Group in General Middleton's Forces. Family has the medal which he received and a Remington 10 gauge shotgun used by the Metis.

Cramer, Albert Edward
Biography:   
Claims: Arrived with John D. Cummings in 1879, claimed land at NE 18-5-13  in 1880
The Cramers began farming at Otenaw a few kilometers northeast of Baldur. Operated a Cheese Factory / Creamery from his farm.. Move the building to Baldur as a store when the town started.

Tisdale, Elizabeth
Biography:  1853, Scotland
Claims: Elizabeth Imlay’s father John Webster Imlay was associated with the building of the Houses Of Parliament and the Inter-Colonial Railway. Her husband, William was a land surveyor for the C.P.R. They homesteaded in 1884. Elizabeth took over farm and raised  a large family after her husband died accidentally in 1897.

Claims: Came from England in 1882.  Worked with William Stark. He and brother Llewellyn bought NW 4-4-14 in 1890. Daughter May, and husband Garnet Darling, took over the Waitt land. Most of farm still in the Darling family (Calvin and Gladys).

Biography:
Claims: Came as far as Brandon, by train in 1885. Louis Riel was on the same train – on his way to Regina for trial. Walked to Baldur (swam the Assiniboine on his way), and homesteaded. Planted an extensive shelter belt in about 1900.

Jesse Chester’s house became a sort of unofficial restaurant for railway workers in 1890 and he was soon persuaded to open a boarding house that became know as the Chester House. It was expanded over the years to become a full-service hotel until the early 1950’s. The Sample Room (where Traveling Salesman could display their “samples”) was in a rectangular building to the north of the gable-fronted “Hotel” part. In 1910 it was taken over by Jos. Morris and became the “Baldur Hotel”

Curtis, Percival
Biography: Born 1860 .England;  Died 1936
Claims: Bought out the business of George Griffith on the corner of Elizabeth and Second Street about 1895. It had been the first store in town.  In 1901 he completed a new brick two-storey building with a distinctive corner entrance and a second level balcony

Came to Canada in 1883

Percy F. Curtis bought out the business of George Griffith on the corner of Elizabeth and Second Street about 1895. It had been the first store in town.  In 1901 he completed a new brick two-storey building with a distinctive corner entrance and a second level balcony. Proprietors included the Playfair Brothers, Neil McDonald, Frederickson’s Cash Store, W.G. Kilgour and the Co-op. The upper level was called the Victoria Hall after Queen Victoria. It was home to various public gatherings and entertainments, including movies in its later years. Mr. Curtis also operated a store in Greenway for a time. He had the areas first telephone installed to callow communication between the two operations.

Jesse Chester’s house became a sort of unofficial restaurant for railway workers in 1890 and he was soon persuaded to open a boarding house that became know as the Chester House. It was expanded over the years to become a full-service hotel until the early 1950’s. The Sample Room (where Traveling Salesman could display their “samples”) was in a rectangular building to the north of the gable-fronted “Hotel” part. In 1910 it was taken over by Jos. Morris and became the “Baldur Hotel”

Came to Canada in 1883

Percy F. Curtis bought out the business of George Griffith on the corner of Elizabeth and Second Street about 1895. It had been the first store in town.  In 1901 he completed a new brick two-storey building with a distinctive corner entrance and a second level balcony. Proprietors included the Playfair Brothers, Neil McDonald, Frederickson’s Cash Store, W.G. Kilgour and the Co-op. The upper level was called the Victoria Hall after Queen Victoria. It was home to various public gatherings and entertainments, including movies in its later years. Mr. Curtis also operated a store in Greenway for a time. He had the areas first telephone installed to callow communication between the two operations.

Claims Commisioned by John Taylor (Icelandic Agent) as a guide for Icelandic settlers who arrived at Port Hope and were bound for New Iceland in 1875. Everett became close friends with Sigurdur Christopherson, Skafti Aranson, Kristjan Jonsson, John Taylor and others. In 1880 Everett was established in Pilot Mound he helped several of those friend find homes in Argyle.
In 1881 his step-brother Henry Josiah Parsonage settled in Argyle on SW 30-6-13. Six generations have lived in Argyle so far.
